Port Royal “barrel” chairs

Christopher’s bucket chairs After you see Maurice Christopher’s handiwork you will never look at a blue, storage barrel quite the same way again. The Port Royal carpenter has taken barrels which once transported goods to the island and converted them into chairs, and they were recently seen at a small watering hole on the fringes of the ocean, near Port Royal. It’s common to see these dent-resistant barrels/drums being used for storage of food and water and other items. They are a favourite of vendors who stuff their wares in them, they are lightweight and can be easily moved from place to place. These ladies are comfortable while they chat with Maurice Christopher. Christopher said someone gave him the idea and he started making these chairs five months ago. The ply-wood h...

Splashing cash without success – Skerritt

Ricky Skerritt Neil-Monticelli Harley-Rüdd Ricky Skerritt, Cricket West Indies (CWI) president, is lamenting the splashing of cash over the past two decades, saying there is little to show for the investment. The West Indies, currently in New Zealand on their second Test tour this year, have been accused of not making a significant improvement performance-wise even after an injection of more than US$250m over the past 20 years. They are scheduled to play a trio of one-day matches, starting next week (November 27), against the hosts before they contest a pair of Test matches beginning December 3. Skerritt made the shock statement this week during his ‘Reforming CWI For Improved On Field Results’ lecture as part of the 20th annual Frank Worrell Memorial Lecture, which w...

Jamaican Marlon Samuels draws stumps

By Neil-Monticelli Harley-Rüdd BNeil-Monticelli Harley-Rüdd Marlon Samuels, the Jamaican all-rounder who was last seen on the pitch by fans in December 2018, has announced his retirement from professional cricket. However, the controversial 39-year-old took to Instagram last week to leave some parting shots. He hit out at former Australia spinner Shane Warne and England's Ben Stokes, following his long-standing feud with the pair, as well as slamming unnamed West Indies players. Kingston-born Samuels, who won two ICCC World Twenty20 finals in 2012 and 2016 respectively, was a stylish middle order batsman who bowled right arm off-breaks but who constantly ruffled feathers during his career. Animals have rights too

A $1,000 could get you a mosquito zapper in today’s Jamaica. It is also what an individual can expect to pay if a Court finds him guilty of cruelty to an animal. And on the flip side of that is the Dogs (Liability for Injuries By) Act of 1877 which says the owner of a dog may be held liable if his dog causes damage or injury to any person, cattle or sheep. This law refers to civil liability and not criminal prosecution. The Jamaica Veterinary Medical Association (JVMA) and the local animal rights lobby want change. They are agitating for laws to be updated so that animals are humanely cared for and better protected and for members of the public to be guarded against vicious animals.   Dr. Simone Johnally, Public Relations Chairman of the JVMA bemoans the fact that the Cr...

Philanthropists, David and Leila Centner are behind this new institution for primary school-aged children who will benefit from a project-based approach. A happy child is a successful child, noted Mrs. Centner, who explained to the Aventura magazine that the school’s philosophy is based on the understanding that success does not lead to happiness, instead happiness is what leads to success. We sought a reaction from distinguished educator Mrs. Collette Fuertado-Pryce, principal of St. Jago High School, which has been in the business of educati...
